Ember & Salt Grill is a grill house in the plainest sense: live coals, a hot grid, and meat turned by hand until the edges catch. Peri-peri chicken, beef burgers, sticky pork ribs and boerewors rolls — the backbone of a South African braai — with chips, slaw and pap on the side.

Nothing here is fussy. The fire does the work, the basting does the rest, and the sides come out in bowls wide enough for the whole table. It is the food you grew up standing around, served on a plate you can sit down to.

We cook for the way Rosebank eats — a quick quarter chicken between meetings, a Saturday table with the kids and the grandparents, and the Friday night when nobody wants to cook, so the same ribs and wors go out the door for collection or delivery nearby.
